I-spy and the number plate game may as well be consigned to history, as the rise and rise of infotainment has been highlighted as a major factor behind growing demand for internal LED displays that are resistant to scratches and wear and tear in vehicles.
Research and Markets' Scratch Resistant Glass Market Analysis forecasts that demand for scratch-resistant glass is highest in LED manufacturing, as high-resolution displays and bigger screens become increasingly popular, particularly in the automotive segment.
Globally, demand for scratch-resistant displays in automotive applications is expected to rise at a compound annual growth rate of 9.9 per cent from 2017 to 2025, as the trend for infotainment and improved passenger safety continues to boom.
There is also growing demand for OLEDs and wearable technology as the Internet of Things revolution sweeps the marketplace.
Rising consumption of OLEDs and wearables, the report stated, is anticipated to further boost the consumption of scratch-resistant glass displays over the 2017-2025 period, with the Asia-Pacific region expected to generate the greatest demand.
This growing commercial need for scratch-proof displays in the region is expected to expand by 8.1 per cent to 2025, as the population continues to adopt smartphone technology and LED lighting solutions.
Innovators in LED display technology are already significantly developing the technology.
A survey by the Taiwan Electronic Equipment Industry Association reported in 2016 that 57 per cent of experts believe micro-LED technology will be commercially available in smartwatches within three years, bringing enhanced display and battery life to wearables.
